ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION FOR SERVICE STATIONS The guide is part of an Environment Action Series prepared by the Department of Environment and Conservation NSW (DEC) to provide information for businesses on improving their environmental performance.
WHAT ARE THE KEY ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES? Key environmental issues for service stations include diesel and petrol spills; stormwater pollution, soil and groundwater contamination, vapour recovery, and greenhouse emissions from energy use.
THE SERVICE STATION INDUSTRY NSW has approximately 2600 service stations that sell 6000 megalitres of fuel a year, which equates to 6000 Olympic size swimming pools. Because they deliver, store and dispense fuel, service stations have unique environmental impacts and requirements. Many service stations also have convenience stores and automotive workshops that have additional environmental impacts, all of which are addressed in this guide.
